Washington has one of the most complex HVAC licensing structures in the country. Mechanical contractors must register with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) and hold an electrical specialty certification (06A or 06B) because HVAC work touches electrical systems. EPA 608 is also required for refrigerant handling.

Three separate credentials for HVAC: L&I contractor registration ($15K bond), 06A (4,000 hours) or 06B (2,000 hours) electrical specialty, and federal EPA 608. Plumbing and electrical contractors have simpler — though still demanding — paths through L&I.

TradesIQ tracks Washington license renewals, CE hours, bonds, and insurance certificates in one dashboard — with automated reminders before anything lapses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Washington HVAC contractors need an electrical license?
Because HVAC equipment routinely involves electrical work (line voltage to compressors, controls, etc.). Washington's 06A and 06B electrical specialty certifications cover the electrical portion of HVAC work and are required alongside L&I contractor registration.
What's the difference between 06A and 06B?
06A is the more comprehensive HVAC/refrigeration electrical specialty (requires 4,000 hours + exam). 06B is a more limited version (2,000 hours). Choose based on the scope of electrical work you'll perform.
